What is an industrial press safety block?
A safety block is a physical barrier placed between the upper die or ram and the lower die of a press during maintenance and die changes. It prevents the ram from falling and protects the operator from crushing hazards.
Are safety blocks required by OSHA?
Yes. OSHA 1910.217(d)(9)(iv) requires employers to provide and enforce the use of safety blocks during die adjustments and repairs in mechanical power presses.
What's the difference between adjustable and non-adjustable safety blocks?
Non-adjustable blocks are fixed-height. Adjustable blocks use designs to accommodate variable shut heights across different tooling.
